For this week's fix, Shaun selects a release by Safire & DRS
Hailing from Melbourne Australia, DJ Ben Safire may not be as well known within the UK scene but down under he has been paving the way for Drum & Bass for a while now. His label Plasma Audio fuses the boundaries between bass music and hip hop featuring artists such as Hybris, Skeptical, Monty & Alix Perez (to name a few) and makes perfect sense for him to now share a release on Perez’s imprint 1985 Music.
Safire’s track titled ‘Holding On’ is a flush soulful roller accompanied by Manchester's finest MC DRS. Jazzy riffs and stabs dance on top of the deep bass typhoon with a couple of verses from the most well know voice in scene creating the perfect recipe for a blue soulful masterpiece. Safire is highly regarded for his production skills and abilities having even presented masterclasses at the infamous Abbey Road Studios in London, he displays them competently on the track wanting me longing for more of his prowess.
The piece is part of a new various artists project on 1985 music call Atlas 1, the first in a new series after the impeccable ‘Edition’ trilogy, a great success and a tough act to follow. Atlas will be a musical journey showcasing some of the best artists in the scene and no doubt every track will be an absolute banger ranging from deep, dark 140 skankers to belting beats made for the rave this release will have everything.
Featuring label favourites such as Deft, Visages and Monty the beauty of these various artists release means we get cameos from friends of the label such as Nymfo and the super illusive Foreign Concept. Released 9th July Atlas 1 is one that will be talked about amongst the Bass music scene for a while to come.
