Welcome to the first ever Deep Cuts auction! We recently hosted our first Deep Cuts event, during which DJs performed themed sets, with each set reflected by a different visual artist, painting their interpretation of the set live, on the spot (based on our Deep Cuts articles wherein different people share music along a shared theme, once a month).
Needless to say it was a headfuck to organise, but we were blown away with the result. Simply put: it worked. An amazing variety of personal, characterful art was created over the 9 hour event. Everyone delivered, often in ways and styles that were totally unexpected.
I wrote an article about the event with more background, but this isn't about me, this is about the Ruff Sqwad Arts Foundation. The whole point of Deep Cuts is encouraging people to express themselves, to speak in their own voice, so it only felt right that all the event's proceeds go to this amazing charity. It's run by a pair of Grime legends, providing young people with resources, opportunities, collaborative sessions and general footholds into the creative industries. All money from this auction (minus delivery fees) will go to RSAF.
This auction (which will conclude at midday on Saturday the 10th of October), gathers the themed artworks from our event, alongside a bunch of fantastic spontaneous artworks created by event guests sat in front of the speakers, and an amazing gift from Trav; the hand-drawn sketches that went on to become his amazing Deep Cuts article illustrations. I always assumed he did them with a digital stylus, it's mad.
Please send bids to firstname.lastname@example.org, they must be atleast £1 above the current bid. Best wishes, Will x
"En Vacances" by Lian Brooks
Painted in response to Rosy Ross’ faded seaside glam DJ set (here is Ross’ favourite track from the set) on A3 paper.
Current Bid: £50
"Dystopeia Dub" by Steffi Will
Painted in response to Felix Raman's moody whirlpool of a set (DJ pick), A3 Canvas.
"No Borders" by Tiesign
No Borders on the dancefloor is the tagline of Tem's 'Freedom of Groovement' radio show, sonic travels are reflected here (DJ pick) on A3 Canvas.
"Out Of Body Airlines" by Dasha
This set was a collaboration between Will Soer, the events organiser and writer of this here auction, and vocalist Julia Star (see her most recent video here), reflected by Star's friend - who specialises in tattoos - Dasha, on 20x20 inch canvas.
"Sunset" by The Hidden Printer
The penultimate set of the night was an absolute firecracker; Ifeoluwa roamed through a whole variety of genres and just blew our socks off (you can listen to the whole thing here), reflected by this A2 Canvas.
"Midnight Marauders of the Future / Deep Cuts" by Trav
Our headliner was NTS Radio legend MarshmeLLo (whose longrunning show is named Midnight Marauders), whose set was at total odds to Ifeoluwa's, growing gradually and smoothly through tempos, (DJ pick) reflected by Trav here on A3 Canvas.
"Midnight Marauders of the Future" by Jasper Golding
Yeah that's right, MarshmeLLo got two illustrations from two Loose Lips crew members. She's just that good. A3 Canvas.
"Enter The Trip" by Malissa Kains
Malissa's central artwork (in response to her partner Medallion Man's opening set) is being sold seperately, but she created these artworks as part of the process, sold as a pair. 2 A4 Canvasses.
"Loose Lips' First Deep Cuts Event Flyer" by Trav
Naturally Trav did the event's flyer, in response to my request that it feature an owl who dreams of grand flight formations #2020. This is the original sketch, you can see the finished flyer here.
"Wordless Tone" by Trav
And here is the first of Trav's Deep Cut article illustration sketches, you can check the article that Trav provided cover art here.
"Old School" by Trav
"Fantasy Realm" by Trav
"Bitter Sweet" by Trav
"Blind Sided" by Trav
"Welcome" by Unknown Artist
This is the only artwork whose origins remain unknown. I mean we know where the canvas came from (shout out to Malissa for grabbing them!!!), and where it was done, but who did it is anyone's guess. I thought "Welcome" would make a good name for it, if you have a better suggestion please feel free! A4 Canvas
"Pisces Dream" by Donalee & Just Jennifer
Painted in response to Pisces Queen Ifeoluwa's set by this pair of musical artists, you might be able to make out a certain lyric from the HUGE banger that appears at 17:50 in the set. A3 Canvas.
"I Need To Think" by Charlotte Cann & "The Wind of a Witch" by Magik (with a K)
This article and its counterpart below were painted by a pair of Julia Star's friends who specialise in witchcraft. Handle with caution.. 2 A4 Canvasses.
"Birds" by Suny
This final piece is by another of Julia's friends, who collaborated with her on a recent EP named Not2B. A4 Canvas.
