Sheffield’s Scott Moncrieff bears the alias Thatmanmonkz, whose vinyl-only three-parter is a gift from the disco gods. The EP drops on US label Better Listen, which is home to Ponty Mython and Cody Currie. Still very much in its early stages, Better Listen’s first release only came out a year ago, in November 2017.
Feels Trips To The District was inspired by a series of trips to the district (see what he did there) of Colombus, USA, which is home to Miguel – his good friend and Better Listen label head. On Moncrieff’s visits, the pair would often frequent many a soirée, with the interpretations forming the four funk-infused tracks that grace this slice of wax.
Opening the EP is ‘Sweetiez Fresh’ – a tasty, tropical trip with hi-hats deftly sewn together with guitar flecks and a dreamy horn section. ‘Thirstin’ continues with the dreamy horn theme coupled with a soulful, angelic female vocal.
The flipside brings the heat with ‘The Assassinator’, which is perhaps the stand-out track on the record. The 70s inspired guitar groove perfectly compliments the impassionately irresistable male vocal assuring us that “the time is right”. Equally soulful and sexy, the EP closes with ‘XDC’.
With previous releases on Dirt Crew Recordings, Classic and Delusions Of Grandeur, as well as a recent remix for Amp Fiddler, this new offering from the Shadeleaf label boss is sure to warm you up inna disco style and is the perfect tonic for the dreary winter weather, wherever you may be.
