This weekend the fourth edition of the Heroines of Sound festival will take place in Berlin’s Radialsystem V. This year’s festival will include performances, installations and panels, focusing on Polish female composers and the miscellaneous forms of electronic performances of past and present.
Heroines of Sound was started in 2014 by curator Bettina Wackernagel, the DJ and booker Mo Loschelder (Media Loca) and the sound studies lecturer Prof. Dr. Sabine Sanio (Academy of Arts Berlin). Heroines of Sound presents the works of female pioneers in different forms of electronic music and finds the connections between the early protagonists and the contemporary composers and performers. The festival has so far presented over 80 female artists from 20 different countries.
On this year’s panels a number of female producers, academics and composers will discuss topics such as the different roles of women in electronic music in terms of a historical and contemporary perspective. This year’s special focus is on the Polish pioneer of acousmatic music Elżbieta Sikora and the works of Polish composers Jagoda Szmytka and Katarina Glowicka.
The festival will also present commissioned works by the German composer of electro-acoustic and orchestral pieces Iris ter Shiphorst and the Austrian DJ, producer and the founder of the female:pressure network Electric Indigo. Another highlight of the programme is a performance of the German Ensemble Mosaik which will be interpreting electro-acoustic pieces by Iris ter Schiphorst, Joanna Wozny, Oxana Omelchuk, Lisa Streich and Marisol Jiménez using traditional instruments.
Attendee’s will be able to witness a selection of interesting live sets from the likes of the sound artist Alessandra Eramo, the ambient and experimental composer Jasmine Guffond, and the dark experimental techno producer CHRA, who will perform her ‘On a Fateful Morning’ piece. Others include the audio-visual performer and abstract techno producer hiTHər’too presenting ‘ttsb within’ and the leftfield electronic producer Heidi Mortenson.
